DESIGNED FOR ENDLESS LIFE. A GLOBAL FIRST. NOT A UTOPIA BUT A REALITY: RECYCLABLE MONO AND DUO CARPETS Start at the end! The idea: thinking through product design from the end – so that a carpet really can be returned to the recycling loop at the end of its useful life. So that it can transform from a valuable secondary raw material to a recovered primary raw material. This is only possible if the carpet can be “dismantled” (separated) and its materials sorted individually. The fact is that conventional carpets are made from up to 30 different materials. A radical change is needed: recyclable MONO or DUO carpets are made from just one or two source materials, meaning that they can be recycled more easily and efﬁciently. Our pioneering Niaga@ technology makes it possible to produce MONO carpets with a pile and backing made from 100% polyester, which can therefore be recycled in one go. Are you looking for a circular carpet with more creative freedom? Our DUO carpets are made from just two materials that can easily be separated after use, and then recycled. NIAGA TECHNOLOGY: With the Niaga® technology, the ﬁbers and ﬁlaments are joined by ther- mobonding, which fuses the surface ﬁbers to a backing. A laminator then bonds the backing to the secondary supporting material using a pure polyester adhesive base and the Niaga® CLICK-UNCLICK technology. This innovative process means that we can use melting instead of relying on precoats, and therefore also do not need binders or harmful ﬁllers such as latex, which compromise health and make recycling more difﬁcult. The production process is also extremely energy-efﬁcient compared with con- ventional production methods and does not even need water. 4

KEY TECHNOLOGY – THE 2-STEP NIAGA COATING PROCESS: FIRST STEP: THERMOBONDING SECOND STEP: LAMINATOR TUFTED PRIMARY BACKING SECONDARY BACKING FINISHED CARPET FUSING FACE FIBERS WITH HEATED THERMAL BLADE APPLYING NIAGA POLYESTER ADHESIVE The thermobonding process uses a heated thermal blade that ﬁxates the face ﬁbers to the primary backing by way of controlled melting. No need for ﬁllers or coatings to come to the required tuft bind values. This enables high- value recycling into equal or similar products. In the second step, the laminator fuses the tufted backing to the secondary backing using Niaga® polyester adhesive. Any contents that could hinder recycling or be harmful to health are no longer required. The polyester adhesive can be deactivated at the end of the carpet’s useful life by applying heat (“UNCLICK”), meaning that both of the carpet’s layers can be returned to the original produc- tion cycle. MONO CARPET DESIGN DUO CARPET DESIGN POLYESTER YARN POLYESTER PRIMARY BACKING POLYAMID or ECONYL YARN POLYESTER CLICK-UNCLICK ADHESIVE POLYESTER SECONDARY BACKING PRIMARY BACKING A MONO CARPET is made purely from polyester. This radical material simplicity means that it can be fully and easily recycled at the end of each use cycle. The 100% polyester design provides additional important beneﬁts as no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are added and the product is hypoaller- genic, ﬂame retardant, easy to clean, and simple to install. A DUO CARPET is made from just two materials: polyamide and polyester. The polyester backing is bonded with the polyamide pile (e.g. Econyl®) using the Niaga® CLICK-UNCLICK technology. The pile and backing can then be easily separated for recycling following use. This bonding process is revolutionary in the industry, and the technology is unique in that no by-products are required such as latex, which make the carpet recycling process difﬁcult. Harmful ﬁllers are also avoided. 5

Following a successful test phase, the trials can undergo ﬁnal testing on the large-scale NIAGA MANUFACTURING LINE with 4 meter width. NIAGA LAB LINE We are able to implement a wide range of design development steps on a smaller scale in our technology labora- tory. The process is fast and easy with the NIAGA LAB LINE trial production line. TUFTING AND COATING AT THE KREFELD PRODUCTION LOCATION At our Krefeld location we produce broadlooms and carpet tiles – cut pile and loop pile – using the tufting process. Coating takes place using our patented Niaga® technology, which we can also use to coat your woven or needle felt products as well as wool. Visionary thinking and farsighted action!
